Getting Into Burlesque

Burlesque is an exciting and vibrant art form that for a small handful can be a rewarding career, and for others a fantastic hobby. Like all performing arts fields Burlesque requires hardwork, training,  creativity and drive.  London is one of the burlesque hubs of the world and has some of the best established performers, venues and shows in the industry.

If you are interested in performing burlesque and are considering it as a career you may be interested to know the following:

- Burlesque Artists originate their own work. Each artist choses their own themes, narrative, choreography, music and is responsible for putting their own acts together. To apply to perform at the majority of burlesque shows you need to already have at least one burlesque act - a performance piece fully costumed, developed and realised with footage and pictures.

- Burlesque artists work freelance and are largely responsible for their own bookings, management and PR.

- Most burlesque artists as well as being very skilled on stage are also highly skilled in hair, make up and will often make and embellish their own costuming. To be a professional burlesque performer you also need to have mastered these skills alongside your stage craft and act creation.

- Burlesque artists come in all shapes and sizes and burlesque itself has many performance styles under its umbrella including Neo, Comedic, Cheese Cake, Gorlesque, Queerlesque, Music Hall, Classic and British to name but a few. In Burlesque we prize individuality, it’s not about replicating what is already out there but about finding your own style.
