Burlesque Idol Season Three...Round One

Last Friday saw the Round One of the third year of Burlesque Idol and what a night it was! It seems the word on our fabulous show is really spreading with advance tickets selling out the day before the show and all of our on the door tickets being sold on the night! We were packed to the rafters and the energy in the crowd was electric.

Barnaby returns again this year as our resident host and expert gag-smith opening the new season in style by being fired in the first 15 minutes of the show by yours truly - a record I think! I think last year he was hired and fired about 7 times by both Lola and myself and I am anticipating more of the same this year with his smart observations and acid-tongued reflexes. If you have not personally been insulted by Barnaby let me assure you, you are missing out on one of life’s little pleasures.

Our guest judges this month were both making their BI debuts: Glory Pearl brought some keen observations from her years as a much admired performer along with some fighting banter, whilst Dave the Bear - boylesque star treated us to some great advice wrapped up in impressions of US Judge Kelly Rowland!

Our contestants this month were all fabulous, kicking off the year by setting the bar very high. Freya Fox channeled Norse Goddess Freya, Alabama Love parodied cult Classic Pulp Fiction and Peggy PomPom treated us to some good old British Burlesque with a military flavour. In the middle section we had Miss Rainbow Sparkles going from Ugly Ducking to Swan, duo The Velveteen Showgirls with Be Italian and Raven Six doing a powerful and dark fan routine.

The winners of the night went to The Velveteen Showgirls - our first ever duo heat winners! Their routine skillfully blended the satirical, with the funny and the sexy and their timing was spot on. Its rare to see routines particularly group ones with so many layers to it, we shall look forward to seeing them again for the final! Raven Six took second place with a routine that was dynamic, well conceived and flawlessly presented, great work all round!

Check out our next show on February 24th when Delores Deluxe shall return from performing in Sweden as our guest judge in residence and we shall be joined by Sarina del Fuego - Performer and Entertainment Manager at Proud Cabaret
